Acai Berry and Its Benefits to Health and Nutrition

What is Acai Berry?

A native plant from Southern America, the acai berry is a prominent berry that is closely related to other kinds of berries including blue and black berries. These berries are essential to health and nutrition. The acai berries are rich sources of anti-free radical components. This includes amino acid supply, vital fatty acids and anti-oxidants. Compared to other kinds of berries, acai berry appears to be more compelling.

What Free Radicals do

Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules that lack an electron. To complete their own chemical structure, they snatch the missing electron from other molecules, for example from the cell membrane of body cells. This process is called oxidation, which is called oxidative stress for the cells. Depending on where oxidative stress is highest in the body, free radicals can be partly responsible for tired skin, eye problems, dementia, joint problems or cancer, for example.

As free radicals also play a major role in skin ageing, the acai berry has gained a reputation as an anti-aging remedy due to its high antioxidant content. According to a study by Emory University School of Medicine, fruit flies that fed on acai berries lived three times longer than their conspecifics. This effect is attributed to the antioxidant action of the acai berry.

Vitamins and Minerals

In addition, 100 grams of acai berries contain about a quarter of the daily requirement of calcium, which is essential for the health of bones and teeth. And vitamin D, which promotes calcium absorption in the body, is also present in small amounts. The acai berry also provides iron for blood formation, magnesium for strong bones and muscles and vitamin A for healthy skin and eyes.

Does the Acai Berry Cause Side Effects?

Apart from possible allergies, there are no known side effects associated with the Acai Berry. However, as acai is only available in Europe in processed form, products should also be checked for possible additives.

Origin Nnd Use of Acai

The acai berry is the fruit of the cabbage palm (Euterpe oleracea). This multi-stem palm, which grows to a height of 25 metres, grows in the tropical regions of South America. It prefers humid locations, such as riverbanks or coastal areas influenced by the tides.

Each trunk forms an inflorescence with more than a hundred flowers, from which the approximately two centimetre large fruits are formed. Acai is a drupe fruit in which about 90 percent of the stone is taken up by the pit. Many describe its taste as oily, nutty or earthy.

Acai Berry – Staple Food of South America

In South America, acai berries have been an important part of the daily diet for thousands of years. The acai berry does not contain any fruit pulp. For use, the skin is removed from the pit and pureed. Many rainforest inhabitants eat the açaí porridge individually or with fish or meat. It is also used to make juices or even ice creams.

How the Acai Berry Got its Reputation as Superfood

The acai berry received its first attention from American surfers in Brazil: the locals served the hungry water sports enthusiasts the acai berries after training – the surfers were impressed by the energy-giving effect.

In 2008, the surgeon, author and TV star Dr. Mehmet Oz reported on the health-promoting effect of the acai berry on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The South American fruit subsequently gained fame as an anti-aging remedy and recipe ingredient for weight loss.
